Forty Six years ago this weekend, the Stonewall Riots, the event that is considered the beginning of the Gay Civil Rights movement began.
Today the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of Marriage Equality for the whole country.
I feel so lucky that my gay son is living during this time. I feel like I need to take a minute to remember all those who didn’t live to see this happen in their lifetime. To people who were told they had a mental disorder. To people who could never be open about who they were. To people who had to lie to everyone close to them. Who had to lie to themselves. To people who didn’t feel they could lead a monogamous loving life because no one else thought they could. To people who died too young. To people who ended their lives because they were told they were an abomination.
I hope that the future generations of gay Americans remember all that you endured for something that is now their right. I hope they realize how lucky they all are to be living now.
An excerpt from the Decision:
It is so ordered.
